The
Story of Ayresouth Fly-In Community
Early in the 1980's the
prospects of a grass-roots fly-in community
began to take hold in the thinking of real
estate broker and pilot, Steven D. Ayres.
Having grown up in and around aviation,
it was only a natural outreach of this exposure.
His Dad,"Bill", T. G. Ayres, original
broker of the company, and a commercially
rated pilot, had inspired Steve to do something
special.
After several years of
groundwork and preparation, Ayresouth, named
by Blanche, his mother, opened for business
around 1987. It was an exciting time and
the development began to grow, slowly but
surely.
Today, we enjoy a 2,000-feet
grass runway, 100 feet wide, with additional
75 feet set backs from the runway. We anticipate
soon adding on another 200 feet in length
to have an overall 2,200 feet. Several families
occupy housing on the strip, including children,
growing up in an aviation environment today.
These families and individuals have constructed,
at the present time, three large hanger
buildings, which house several airplanes.
And we are growing.
We are FAA registered,
on the Atlanta Sectional Chart, and just
outside the Mode C Veil, 30-mile limit,
and are just barely within the 35-mile limit
of the west Atlanta ATC. So we are a haven
for antique and classic aircraft, including
tail draggers, which love the grass field.
We would encourage you to come and join
us in this exciting air adventure. The sky
is truly the limit and we need you aboard!
Happy
Landings!
